Dipping my toe in the water …

After a brief visit last year, I felt that Bath deserved more time, and so I arranged an AirBNB with a couple about ten minutes walk from the city. It turned out that he is an officer with The Rifles and had served with Australians in Iraq.

I spent a fair bit of my first (part) day walking around, seeing the interesting places like the Kennet and Avon Canal and generally getting my bearings. The second day I was taken by my friends for a walking tour of the non-tourist parts of the city, including a cemetery and tower high up on Widcomb Hill. It was a misty rain kind of day so the place was quiet despite nearby traffic, and the low visibility added to the sense of gloom about the place.

The weather improved as the day progressed and we partook of a pleasant lunch in the Raven Hotel, accompanied, of course, by a glass of the local ale …

I walked more of the canal later, and hatched a plan … of which more later, perhaps.

Watching narrow boats moving through the lock system I was in the right place to lean on the gate of one lock to open it … not a major part, but I played one!

The canal system has been rescued from oblivion by tourists and visitors and is now well looked after, with more older canals being opened progressively. People live on canal boats full time in some places, mooring fees are often less expensive than paying rent, and you can buy a canal boat fairly cheaply if you are prepared to renovate it and create an inside space for living.
