Leamington Spa, your Majesty …

There is an award winning railway station, and it’s not that far from London. The town was granted Royal status after a visit from Princess Victoria in the 1830s. It is situated on the River Leam, and the ‘new’ town to the north of the river contains wonderful Georgian archicture.

I went there because a friend, a former AirBNB host, now lives there, and I’d wondered about the ‘royal’ status. (I did say that I was following the wind!)

The locals pronounce the name more like ‘lemmington’ than ‘leemington’, and the architecture is indeed worth seeing. It’s also only a short walk to small villages on the fringe of the city, such as Old Milverton, with a lovely church and churchyard.

Guys Cliffe is also nearby, and was apparently named after the old manor house, the ruins of which were visible from our lunch spot besides the river.
