This service has been suspended ….

Fortunately I was on it at the time, and doubly fortunate that the suspension point was were I was intending to go to anyway. Train services are suspended for many reasons and the London Underground has an app that tells you what is wrong, the expected delays and lots of other info. Tonight the cause was not shown, but the train came to a halt at Parsons Green and everybody dutifully got out and walked down the steps to the barriers, tapped off their Oyster cards and headed off to home or whatever they had planned.

The British can be remarkably patient people, no-one tries to force the doors of a train as it pulls out of the station in the way that Australians sometimes do, they shrug as if to say it’s my fault, I was late, and then stand behind the yellow line to await the next train. To be fair, this behaviour may be at least partly due to the fact that the next train is likely to be only minutes away.

The British also know how to queue …
