I think he was trying to be helpful but, who knows, he spoke no English and didn’t seem prepared to listen to my attempts at French. On the other hand, he was helpful!

Bouygues has a two month ‘tourist’ card with plenty of data for €40 , so I got that; apparently the RED card is only available online and I will look at that later. One hopes I can just transfer the number when I want to. At least I am back in touch and will have a stable number for two months … one of these at the beginning might’ve been a good start.

And I have an Eiffel Tower sim removal pin as a bonus!
