And so back to Salzburg, a couple more days en route to, maybe, Munich, Geneve and elsewhere. Apart from a few set dates, I’m now going where the wind blows.
This time I was in the modern Pension Elizabeth, not far from the hotel where I stayed first time, but a much better room, with airconditioning, a bit of a rarity so far on this trip.
I wanted to go up the Gaisberg, and see some less touristy parts of the area.
There is a bus to the summit of the Gaisberg, which is 1288m high. Contrast that with the highest point on mainland Australia, Mount Kosciuszko which is 2228m high.
The Gaisberg is a popular spot for paragliding, especially as flyers can catch the bus up to the top and fly down to their car parked near the bottom of the mountain.
Near the paragliders’ landing site are the remains of several interesting buildings. An old mill, abandoned for some years, and later damaged by fire, is under redevelopment … and there is a gap in the fence!
Nearby are several chalet style buildings also neglected, they are big and interesting looking and it would a shame to pull them down for something modern.
